Dover, DE- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred earlier this afternoon at the Dover toll plaza.
The incident occurred around 11:50 a.m. as Shirley J. Taylor was operating a 2007 Honda Civic southbound on SR1 approaching the toll plaza. For unknown reasons, the Civic failed to slow and stop for a 1999 Sterling 10 wheel rollback truck that was stopped behind another vehicle which was in the process of paying the toll. The Civic struck the rear crash bar and rode up underneath the truck where it came to a stop.
Shirley J. Taylor was extricated by mechanical means by the Dover Fire Department and transported to Kent General Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries at 3:08 p.m.
Paul A. Leone, the operator of the rollback, was properly restrained and was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Kent General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Prior to the crash, calls were received to the Kent County Emergency Operations Center (9-1-1) of a maroon vehicle driving erratically on SR1.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation into this incident. The toll plaza was closed for two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared. The Express Lanes of SR1 remained open and tolls were suspended during that time.
